Future Licks EP is Masterbuilders first official release in 2 years and presents itself as one of their most distinguished releases to date, bringing together a truly world-class collection or remixers, new collaborators and illustrious vocalists, including Georgia Anne Muldrow (Stonesthrow). Future Licks EP boasts a selection of deep vibes to stimulate all moods and certainly rock any speaker system in any surrounding.

Broke (KM3 Mix) is an immense boogie tune featuring the adept vocals of LaSkeema, supported by none other than Stonesthrow’s much revered ‘queen bee’, Georgia Anne Muldrow. KM3 backs-up this incredible talent with a superlative Rhodes hook, floating over vinyl sampled drum hits and a very dope, ’eightiesesque’ analogue bass-line.

The EP is so titled because all tracks will be released individually early next year together with further remixes. The release is out now on promo through YoYoTrax, an ethical, musician-orientated site set up by Patrick and partners. Album Review :: Georgia Anne Muldrow :: Early

"I'm a wide open vessel, true love expressing, I'll never live a day in vain"... Truer words couldn't describe what seems to be the effort put into this album. The words, sound & energy that reels from Early make it apparent that Georgia Anne Muldrow bared her soul to us. Her words spoke of truth & as a result, this, like her other albums will not be in vain. The most exciting thing of all though, is that these words were penned when she was between the ages of 17-19. These words set the stage for the work we've had the pleasure of enjoying over the years.

She spoke of cherishing time with self, dwelling in self appreciation, living life to the fullest, loving everything, and letting go of unnecessary excess. The way in which she brings words to light is an art form. Her voice flows colorfully like paint on canvas leading to a beautiful masterpiece. That's what Early is, beautiful words captured in song & sound over beautiful melodies, it makes the delivery so palatable and enjoyable because it touches your soul deeply. There is no facade, it is Ms. Muldrow in her youthful essence dropping jewels that transcend time.

For the most part I listened via headphones, and with or without them it felt like she was performing in my living room. The instrumentation, the free flowing organic jazz feel of Early has a quality of sound that is missing in music today. Her powerful & crisp voice, her scatting, her laughter as she sings... complemented by her production skills... this is by far one of the best albums of '09. It is for that reason that I didn't need to isolate any specific song, the overall album is stellar. As a result, Pink Bubblegum gives Early 6.5 out of 7 head nods.

Album review::Georgia Anne Muldrow::Umsindo

As promised, I'm back with the review of Ms. Muldrow's tribute to the Ancestors; Umsindo which drops July 28th, yup, that's tomorrow! A cohesive album that reminded me of the era when there was gusto in a woman's voice. A time when you heard the words, but you felt the soul. A soul that lives throughout this body of work, and stays true to the name and definition of the album... Umsindo... "sound" in the Zulu language.

With 24 noteworthy tracks it's easy to speak about the album as a whole. It has a "let's kick it and listen to some good music, and maybe have a jam session" kind of vibe [a la Fonky Day]. You don't have to be solely paying attention to the album to hear it. It reaches out to you even if you're fully engaged in conversation. The instruments used to manipulate each song grab your attention. The words, you can't help but hear em. It's like you're going about life being productive and you hear something profound, the good thing is you're able to hit rewind to see what exactly she said.

"Walk in happiness & don't let it go , even if this world grows cold... You got it, complete & whole, you'll be fine cuz you've got soul" Words to live by, sum'n to motivate you thru the day. Words like that you'll hear in Generation/You Got It. Jina Langu Ni Afrika (My Name Is Afrika) and Idlozi are just two of the tracks that would appeal to any dancer because of the drumming. Accompanying her singing &/chanting are the drums. Growing, swelling, then fading as it subtly controls your every move [and repeat].

To keep on her constant path to enlightenment and education she speaks truth & life into John De Conqueror, Uhuru Flight, and Caracas. She speaks of past struggles, current battles and the hope of moving forward over ill intricate loops, sounds, and beats. Voicing her opinion in ways that may piss off some; she flows ever so sickly as she switches between rapping and singing to get the desired effect... to get your attention.

Ms. Muldrow delivered with the reverberation that is Umsindo. The stellar production that can be found in anything Muldrow touches is clearly on display in this her 3rd studio album. The beautifully written personal invitation into her world via E.S.P and Roses is such a testament.

For the aforementioned reasons Pink Bubblegum gives Umsindo 6.5 out of 7 Head Nods.

Back from hibernation with the brand new single from the grand fOnkateer, Dudley Perkins, featuring production from his co-pilot, Georgia Anne Muldrow. Their latest offering, aptly entitled “fOnky Soul,” finds Dudley’s “fOnk in habit form” buttered over a particularly whip-friendly slice of Georgia’s unique brand of west coast bump. Looking to start 2010 off with a bang, Georgia Anne Muldrow & Declaime (AKA Dudley Perkins) are dropping the track "Endure" from their upcoming joint album SomeOthaShip along with the fresh "Endure" EthNick Remix courtesy of beat maestro Nick Tha 1Da.
"Endure" is a song of contrasts - contemplative yet free-spirited, dark yet uplifting - and it gives listeners an all-access pass into the minds of Georgia & Declaime. The track, which also features the lyrical stylings of M.E.D. and Rapper Big Pooh, seems fit for the times as it urges listeners to "endure the storm" and to "remember that the bad times have only made you stronger." The positive vibes are inspired in part by Georgia who says that the lyrics help pull her out of the past "and into a new and improved being that is ready to act in the liberation of [her] people through music." As the lyrics end, the song endures for a full minute in a meditative instrumental state giving the listener a moment to pause and reflect upon the track's central theme which, according to Georgia, is to "endure" and not to "give up on yourself, or your potential to be greater than you've chosen not to be."

SomeOthaShip, a Mello Music Group release, will be available digitally February 16th and will be hitting physical retail locations February 23rd.

REVIEW: ERYKAH BADU//RETURN OF THE ANKH

 First off...I have to say that I have been there in the beginning....watching this beautiful sista grow into the artist she is today. No, I don't mean I was physically there with Ms. Erica Abi Wright, but I was there growing with her music as she evolved. I have to say, Erykah Badu not only inspired me in many ways as an artist, but so many of my singer friends and others alike.

 There was Baduizm which had everyone in '97 wondering who this chick with the head wrap was and what she represented. Next was Mama's Gun which showed Erykah's growth and ability to stretch beyond her critics limitations. World Wide Underground was just a reminder to fans that "Hey! I'm still here and doing my thing". Badu's New Amerykah Pt. 1: 4th World War  came out of nowhere and made fans and naysayers believers again...that she was here to continue bringing us classic,funky,soulful music for generations to come. Now with the New Amerykah Pt. II : Return of the Ankh  dropping March 30, 2010, after many push backs, it has puzzled people as to what new sound Erykah Badu will return with.

For myself, I hear the same Erykah Badu. Vocally she is the same and lyrically there is some stifling but nevertheless, she is still dope stylistically and musically. What disappointed me about this album is it's inability to be cohesive as it's sister albums. I'm sure those on Badu's tits will disagree but this is my review and my thoughts. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good and some better than others, but it still lacks in many ways. I don't feel what the long wait was for like I did with Mama's Gun or with her Kedar label mate D'Angelo's album Voodoo. I really prayed that the songs she released wouldn't be apart of the album but they were so I kind of was ready to give this review before chosen to do so LOL Here is my breakdown of the latest album:

20 Feet Tall

This track has very minimal production. I'm actually surprised since this is a 9th Wonder production. An intro pretty much consisting of an organ sound and Badu. I think this is an intro that may have people eventually skipping over it lol but I dig it. It's the musician in me.

Window Seat

Well, what can I say. A production by James Poyser and Questlove makes this some classic Badu right here. It's vintage. It's soulful...it's what I originally liked about her in the first place. It takes you in so many directions. Plus, you guys know ;) This song was released for our listening pleasure.

Agitation 

This reminds me of something that should have been an intro instead it was made an interlude. I thought it was too early to be an interlude, but hey! What do I know. The production was done by Shafiq Husayn of Sa-Ra who was also responsible for a few tracks on the last installment of New Amerykah. Through the chorus Erykah chants "What a Day,What a day" a borrowed line from her song On & On. I believe that this could have been really hot if it was longer and had more lyrics from Badu.

Turn Me Away (Get Munny)

Oh no! I was pretty hurt. It was leaked early by Badu so we can hear what she had in store. First, let me say. Being that I am a beat junkie and I know where this comes from, I was not impressed. Sylvia Striplin deserved better especially since no one hardly knows who she is, especially in this generation. If  E.Badu was going to attempt this, instead of doing an interpolation, she should have remade the entire song. I didn't think the way she sung the chorus was bad or anything but she should have known better for the execution of this song. No apologies.

Gone Baby, Don't be Long

Another song that has some of the old lines from her previous classic songs. Yet, this is one of my favorites on the album. The production by Taarak is smoking and I enjoy the way Erykah's voice rides it.

Umm Hmm

 That is how I felt when I heard this track. I was like "Umm Hmm, this sample is hot Madlib". Again, Erykah's vocals are simple and lyrics very minimal. Not sure exactly what she is talking about, but I like it.

Love

This one is for DILLA! That's right. Dilla production. I really love this track. Erykah is basically singing her signature cooing. Dope song.

You Loving Me (Session)

 A simple interlude. That is all LOL

Fall in Love (Your Funeral) 

This is another one of my favorite tracks off this album.This was produced by Karriem Riggins. This is basically the same sample from Eddie Kendricks' "Intimate Friends" that Alicia Keys had in her song "Unbreakable". This version is better than Alicia's in my opinion. I like the borrowed Notorious B.I.G. lines also. As for Erykah, her voice has not left her comfort zone. It's still the same. It's expected though so I am not disappointed.

 Yeah. Madlib must not have check the drum programming for this one. Pretty melodies + bad drums= a sad FLASHBACKhoney :(

Out My Mind, Just in Time

 Love this piece. It was produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow. Funny, this song is 10 mins long, but I can still listen to it all the way through. The first part of it which is just acoustic piano and light strings, is a perfect fit for Badu's voice. I really wish I heard Georgia sing it though. Just saying. No disrespect to Badu in anyway but when the music turns into some familiar production that is very much Georgia Anne Muldrow's style, I expect to hear Georgia.

 Conclusion:

I think that overall this album could have  been held back a little more until some thought was put into it. Love Badu, love the songs, but lyrics do not have any depth. I think she is running out of ideas or she is going through writer's block as a lot of great musicians and singers do. I give her points for being her original self vocally and for her style as an artist.

This mix began as a blend of instrumentals. After I'd selected the 9th Wonder instrumental reworking of Vicki Anderson's Stop on By and Babu's refixing of Dionne Warwick's You're Gonna Need Me, I decided to go another route. Both of the originals have powerful female vocals which immediately put me in the mind of Northen Soul. Leela James and Georgia Anne Muldrow (1/2 of G&D) are current artists that I could easily see handling the reigns after Sharon Jones releases them. Strong drums, pianos and horns throughout and spacy at times, this mix is a 30 minute treat for the discerning listener. Enjoy!
