NEW ARTIST & DOWNLOAD: DURAND BERNARR

I have been watching this young man for awhile and the first time I heard of him, I stumbled across him singing J*Davey entire album while he was joy riding on youtube. Durand Bernarr has a voice that, to me, it is reminiscent of Tevin Campbell and Rahsaan Patterson, both extremely talented artists. I must say, the Cleveland,OH singer's voice is so nice and smooth that he caught the attention of many of my favorite artists such as J*Davey and Erykah Badu. Speaking of Badu, Durand is such a fan of hers that he decided to create an Ode to Erykah Badu in honor of her birthday and his appreciation for her music. So I am linking you to the world of a very talented singer who has much to give to the world. Download his projects now!

Prince - Cause & Effect

"I am here! Where are you?!"
The Purple One is back with some new music, has it been that long?! In between fake tweeting and canceling shows Prince found time to release the upbeat guitar heavy track 'Cause & Effect'. Honestly, it's not the best Prince track I've heard but any Prince is better than none so I'll take it, and there's no denying that he's still got it. No word yet if this is a tease for a new album in the near future but we can only hope, and let's get that Purple Rain sound back again.

straY - Won't Do That (Remix) featruing Cerebral Vortex

Mattias Axelsson's alias straY just released his dope new album 'Get On Up' recently to much fan fare and he decided to give the people a bonus to vibe too. A breakdance flavored remix of 'Won't Do That'. A hip techno trip that builds and builds and gets better up to the track's conclusion. I especially love the breakdown at the end. This ain't no meatloaf! straY is definitely making a good name for himself.

Dynasty - Magnificent

It's the return of the Femcee! Dynasty first caught our ears back in August of last year and it turns out she's still blessing the mic and doing it well. I'm loving Magnificent, the title does the song much justice. Check the single that had DJ Premier going crazy HERE

Black Spade - New U

We got some new Black Spade in our inbox this morning. Bonus! 'New U' is a nice and smooth headnodding melody with some ill lyrics that reminds me why I love real hip-hop soul. It's because tracks like 'New U' will always outshine the wackness. Check it out!

DJ Pump presents Jeepney Sound Vol. 6

I'm gonna have to take a major late pass on this one. Apparently this mix came out in March of 2007 and I only came across it last month but didn't get around to listening to it until last night while working. But when I hit the play I was instantly blown away and I give credit to DJ Pump for getting me through my long night. Jeepney Sound, Vol. 6 is a dope mix of real hip-hop and soul blends and rare grooves that will make you want to declare out loud how hot it is. DJ Pump did this as a dedication to the late great J Dilla and there's even a Dilla tribute in the middle. Those damn Canadians, they're good for something! Download: Jeepney Sounds Vol. 6.

Sulaiman - D'ecent (Download)

Sulaiman sez, "I wanted to share with you a cool lyrical exercise that I executed earlier this week. I came across some instrumentals by Chris P in which he flipped D'Angelo samples from Voodoo, one of my favorite albums of all time. So what'd I do? Well of course I decided to do a "sniptape", take 10 of the beats and make a fly little mini-project that I properly entitled D'ecent." This is dope, way better than some projects we've been sent w/artists flipping classic projects. Listen below, love it, then download HERE

Carlitta Durand - Doug & Patty: Season Two (in Sheckyvision)

"About a month or so ago, producer Vaughn Garcia, and the incredibly talented vocalist Carlitta Durand (Little Brother, Foreign Exchange) got together to do an EP loosely based on the characters of the "Doug" cartoon. It was released on the blogosphere to very good reviews. She started to float the acappellas around for people to remix, and being a fan of hers, I jumped at the chance. Here's my take on the "Doug & Patty EP" for your listening pleasure. Enjoy..." -Applejac
Applejac did more than just remix Carlitta's Durand's already stellar EP he completely reworked the vibe of the release and for the better. While the original was a bouncy pop influenced trip Applejac's release is more smooth and soulful. Carlitta's vocals glides over his production and sounds so fluid and organic. This is constant rotation material here, I can't wait for Season 3! Download Doug and Patty: Season Two (in Sheckyvision).

Tony Towerz 'Plastik Soul' Album

Not very many artists these days step outside the box, most tend to experiment but settle into a safe comfort zone that we as listeners tend to put them in. It takes a brave and truly creative mind to break convention and deliver something that defies a single definition. Tony Towerz is one of those artists, and on his mixalbum 'Plastik Soul' he shows us just outside the box he can go. The ATL native takes a cue from the Hollyweerd and infuses the album with obscure movie clips to accentuate the album's theme, which I am very much fond of. The album is a smattering of different genres ranging from pop, r&b, soul, rock, and electronic. Influenced by David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and Bobby Brown, the singer-songwriter-producer-musician draws from those influences and his own experience and takes us on an amazing musical journey. Teaming up with his childhood friend and producer, ScottChris. They formed together the production team “The Ultra Beat Boyz” which includes two other members Furious & B. Walker. The project they delivered here is in one word amazing, a consistent vibe that will challenge your mind and change your attitudes towards new and emerging art forms, or that is the hope. That's why we need artists like Tony Towers to challenge our music morals and definitions. Are you ready to accept? Then Download: Tony Towerz 'Plastik Soul'.

Jose James - Code (Download)

Brownswood Recordings has recently released Jose James' latest album, Black Magic which continues their great tradition of forward thinking releases. Black Magic does not disappoint as Jose James has expanded his musical boundaries working with folks like Flying Lotus, Jazzy Sport's DJ Mitsu the Beats, Moodyman, Taylor McFerrin, and others on this release.

Code produced by Flying Lotus is a track that has remained on repeat for me. You may have seen the music video to this song already, but now the audio for the song has been released. Enjoy

Kanye West 'Coldest Winter' Video

Over a year after 808's and Heartbreak's release Kanye West has released the official video for one of the most somber song's on the release 'Coldest Winter'. The video directed by surrealistic photographer Nabil Elderkin tells a visually compelling Burtonesque tale but is also reminiscent of the wraith scene from Fellowship of the Ring. But all in all it's a dope vid and I'm glad Kanye put it out there, check it out and leave us a love note and let us know what you think.

Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop - Al Naafiysh (The Soul) The Remixes

Back in 1983, Hashim's Al Naafiysh became one of the defining electro classics. 25 years later, 2 dope boys from Berlin – Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop – pay hommage with their seminal new-funk version (available on their album Stamp Out Reality and on the double a-side 12“ Rare Occasion). Due to the versatile qualities of the song, we started a remix competition. Our five favourites are now available on one digi EP. Don't expect the usual MPM style (if there is one for you), it's a mixed bag of 8-bit electro, deep house, knarz house and slomo dub.

88-Keys - Wake Up Call

88-Keys released this track off the upcoming NBA Live 10 Soundtrack, accompanied by Black hipsters favorite white folk singer Colin Munroe. It's a bouncy upbeat track with the witty distorted lyricism that we've come to like from 88-Keys. Check it out!

Jodeci - Freek 'N You (Hudson Mohawke Remix)

Hey ya'll Jodeci is back!!! Well not quite, sorry to get your hopes up, but feel free to enjoy this dope remix of their classic 'Freek 'N You' by rework master Hudson Mohawke. Which is a totally appropriate title and has no lascivious connotation whatsoever, this is good clean wholesome music here. Ok I'm fibbing, just listen to this track and be taken back to '95 again.

Jodeci - Freek You (Hudson Mohawke Remix)

While They're Still Here: Nasir Jones Tribute 'Shootouts' (Illastrate Remix)

Listen. Rewind. Repeat! That's pretty much all there is to say about this track. The homie Illastrate blessed our inbox with a dope reworking of one of my favorite Nasir Jones tracks. This is from his 'While They're Still Here' series dedicated to the Living Legends of our time. The horns and steady drum beat instantly makes me nod my head and blends well with Nas' lyrical flow. Just press play on this one, you won't be sorry.

While They're Still Here: Nasir Jones Tribute 'Shootouts' (Illastrate Remix)

Jazmine Sullivan - Jumpoff featuring Señor Kaos and Coultrain (Wajeed Remix)

"Here's a un-released song from Jazmine Sullivan Feat. Señor Kaos & Coultrain Produced By Wajeed (Platinum Pied Pipers/Bling 47) for her last album "Fearless." The song didn't make the album, but it's still a great record that needs to be heard." -Señor Kaos
This is infotainment here, and the message is clear: you just might be a jumpoff! A drum heavy beat and ill role reversal verse by Señor Kaos leads the track off and fades into Jazmine's vocals, such as they are. As individual pieces they work but together as a whole the finished product falls flat but that's not to say it's bad. It's a decent song but not the best and was probably the reason for it's omission from the album. But take a listen for yourself and leave us a love note and let us know what you think.

DJ Statik Presents a Taste of ...Lady Alma (Silhouette Brown) (2004)

Lady Alma recently emerged as the voice of the much lauded Silhouette Brown and yesterday DJ Statik of the Ill Vibe Collective released his mix, 10 Years of Illvibe. The combination of these occurences mark a great time to release a project where these two phenomenons collided to create "an intimate portrait of world renowned, Philly based dance music diva" Lady Alma!

Next Stop...Soweto

Strut follow their recent forays into Nigerian and Ethio grooves with a brand new wide-ranging three-part series exploring underground South African music during the late ‘60s and ‘70s, Next Stop Soweto Volume 1 explores the vibrant energy of the township jive sound, whilst Volumes 2 and 3, released across Spring and Summer 2010, cover rare SA soul, funk & Hammond R&B and the country’s rich jazz scene.

With Next Stop Soweto, Strut trace some of the amazing music that often only appeared on short run 45s at the time, including tracks by smaller and lesser known bands that plied their trade under apartheid during the years before the tumultuous Soweto uprising of 1976. Featuring music recorded primarily for the local market, the album takes the listener far beyond the accepted township jive template into fusions with jazz, gospel, rumba, funk and traditional mining songs, all under-pinned by a gritty, uncompromising edge.

Joya Mooi - Hard Melk

"Mooi" adj. derived from the Dutch word meaning: beautiful, used in South African slang as nice/pretty. These are words that would describe Joya Mooi and her music. Her love of music, especially jazz, starting at a young age, has shaped her style as she began to develop her skills vocally. She later was discovered during her internship at MC. Brian Elstak asked Joya to create a soundtrack for the new theater play BH and the rest is history. The mysterious and talented beauty's debut album 'Hard Melk' is a incredible blending of genre's ranging from smooth soul to jazz to electronic. 'Hard Melk' features production by SirOj, Presto, Big2, Hayzee, Wan and Full Crate. Check out the video below and get to know more about her here. Houstatlantavegas - Sonnymoon vs. Nite Jewel vs. Drake (Melo-X Remix)

One of the busiest and most creative minds in music today, Melo-X just did a dope remix of an already dope remix. Taking elements of Sonnymoon's version of Drake's 'Houstatlantavegas' and merging them with Night Jewel's 'What Did He Say' and creating a nice polyphonic blend. This is an Exclusive Track featured on MeLo-X’s Next project entitled 'Audio Foreplay' coming on on March 15th. 'Audio Foreplay' will be a prelude to MeLo-X's first official Album 'Sonic Intercourse' which will be released this summer. I can't wait!

The SureShot presents: 10 Years of Illvibe Freestyles & Exclusives

Remember when hip-hop music wasn't manufactured mass produced and sold, a rapper actually had to have skills, and they had to prove said skills on the microphone in order to be taken seriously in the industry. Now sometimes all you need is a voicebox and a pair of skinny jeans (grill and big ass chain optional) and you can be number 1 on 106 & Park. Well The Illvibe Collective hasn't forgotten and with this release they're making sure we won't either. '10 Years of Illvibe Freestyles and Exclusives' is a collection of dope freestyles and tracks expertly mixed (remember mixtapes) by Mr. Sonny James featuring off the dome verses by Supastition, Hezakiah, Dave Ghetto, and Percy P, and many others. So press play on this take a trip down memory lane with us, and put it on repeat!

BUG - Cosmic Lab b/w 20 Winks

24 year-old Londoner, BUG, is a keyboard player, songwriter and producer. Under the moniker, BUG, he creates an experimental, instrumentally grounded style of music with a compositional approach. The BUG sound encompasses the finer elements of hip-hop and neo-soul, yet the real beauty is in the delivery. Think the smooth richness of the Dam-Funk vibe, the solid construction of a Dilla beat, the electronic wizardry of Flying Lotus and the soulful melodies of Lonnie Liston Smith's jazz.
The debut single from BUG, Cosmic Lab b/w 20 Winks, is out right now via the newly formed Jus Like Music Records, and it's absolutely FREE!
