DJ Spinna Presents The Boogie Back - Post Disco Club Jams

Boogie Music is the dance music genre that was wedged between 70’s disco music and the electronica explosion of the 90’s. Some call it Post Disco, some call it Electro Funk, but the characteristics that define Boogie Music (funk, soul and R&B) would form the building blocks of proper house music. This is the kind of music that was coming out of the inner city clubs of the time and there’s a whole lot of culture and emotion built into these songs. Hell, Michael Jackson’s classic Off The Wall is a boogie record!
A child of the 70's DJ Spinna (aka Vincent Williams) lived through the boogie heydays. With a global resurgence in vintage club music, Italo disco, alt dance and dance rock, Spinna felt it was his duty to pay homage to the original artists who inspired so many of today’s hottest DJs and musical acts. The jams on this compilation rocked the airwaves in Brooklyn back in the day and now it’s ripe from a brand new crop of music lovers across the world. This package really satisfies all tastes and moods.
Disc One is DJ Spinna’s ready made block party DJ Mix for getting it all going right. These crispy, funky tracks are lined up side-by-side for a vibe that takes you straight to the streets, circa 1982. A second disc is prime meat for all you crate diggers and features 12 unmixed classics; many of which are unavailable on CD, Vinyl or even digitally!
Once again DJ Spinna delivers a product that’s not just 4/4 beats or empty tracks. Rather, through all his many releases over the years he’s proven to be the authority on providing real music for real people. DJ Spinna is one of a few active DJs today whose versatility and all round knowledge covers so much ground. From Rock to Jazz, Reggae to Hip-Hop, soundtracks to House, Soul, Funk, Disco or Techno this man has the knowledge and can rock parties as good as any leading lights in any of the aforementioned scenes. BBE releases DJ Spinna Presents The Boogie Back - Post Disco Club Jams on November 24, 2009

Senor Kaos - Walk Softly & Carry A Big Brick (Download)

Atlanta’s own, independent emcee Señor Kaos releases a new project titled, “Walk Softly & Carry A Big Brick.” For Kaos, the project title means to stay focused, strong in one’s convictions and to do so without being seen as a threat. When it comes to music, Kaos is soft spoken about his emcee abilities, but his lyrics hit listeners square in the face and serve as a wake up call for all other emcees. Kaos uses the title as an announcement to any formidable opponents on the microphone to be prepared.

The project features guest appearances by Bun B, Wale, 4-Ize, Punchline, Jaspects, Stacy Epps, 4th Pyramid, John Robinson, Stahhr, Homeboy Sandman and many more. The project also includes production from Large Professor, DJ Spinna, 9th Wonder, Von Pea, Jake One, 2 Hungry Bros. and others.

All Things Brazil (pt.2) Besuro (Beetle) Theatrical Trailer

My wife and I have been watching this trailer over the past few months with hopes that it will get a proper release. Based on the life of folkloric capoeira legend Besouro Mangangá, the release is estimated for November 2009. This is the martial arts film we've all been waiting for.

All Things Brazil (pt1) - Os Mutantes - Haih Or Amortecedor (Preview Link)

In my never-ending search of all (or most) things Brazilian, I received this album a couple of weeks ago, Haih Or Amortecedor, by the legendary Brazilian psych-rock legends Os Mutantes. They along with fellow Tropicalia musicians, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and many others represented the cultural movement/revolution that respectively included visual arts, poetry, and theatre, taking in many influences and genres, then combining them and creating something entirely of its own..very similar to hip hop come to think of it. Hmmm..

This is their first studio release in over 30 years with its original leader Sergio Dias and a host of new players and writers on board, including experimental Brazilian sound champions Tom Ze and Jorge Ben.

Os Mutantes is as bugged out as it gets in terms of style and categorization, but that's what's so wonderful about artistry..wielding the ablity to break down barriers, think out of the box, and push the envelopes without having to care what folks think, even when writing three clichés in a row hahaha..

Brownout - Aguilas And Cobras - Review

The third release from heavy Latin funk outfit, Brownout dropped a couple of weeks ago and has since filled a welcomed space in my Latin funk collection. Hailing from Austin, Texas, and co-lead by the ubiquitous Adrian Quesada (Groupo Fantasma, Ocote Soul Sounds), Brownout's members have toured with and played for Prince (under Groupo Fantasma), so needless to say, they have mad chops in the instrumentation department.

Complete with fuzzy guitars, blaring horns, banging keys, solid percussion, and breaks galore, Aguilas and Cobras combines the best of Latino funk, rock, psychedelia, and soul, while nodding frequently to the roots of African rhythms. Sonically, the recording sounds like a long lost reel of Santana meets Chakachas, meets The Meters, circa 1972-1976, yielding a soundtrack feel throughout the listen. What I dig most about this album is that it would have sounded just as good if it were released in the 70's, when most of the group members were a mere glimmer in their parent's eyes.

In The Booth
Con el Cuete - The hypnotic mid-tempo rhythm and keyboard work makes this a nice one to get the night started.

Tell Her She's Lovely - Refreshing early set track, nice title and lyrics. Brother Carlos Santana would be proud of this one.

Olvidalo - Opening breakbeat, acoustic guitar rhythm, and call and response makes this a favorite. Definitely for the b-boys and girls.

S.F.L.A. Con el Cuete Reprise - I can already hear cats chopping this one up on the MPs. This one sounds like the drive home at 5:30 am just before sunrise.
Pick it up here.

Junior Star gives Aguilas and Cobras 5.5 out of 7 head nods

To celebrate the group's forthcoming tour and to help tide fans over until the November 10th release of Montezuma's Revenge, Souls Of Mischief is also pleased to release a new track, "LaLaLa," which serve's as the album's closer. Zero 7 Then & Now :: Destiny - Mr.Mcgee

As I mentioned in the Yeah Ghost review, there has been an evolution in Zero 7's way of making music. Amazon.com had this to say: "On Yeah Ghost Zero 7 is embracing fresh ways of thinking... Their first three albums captured Sam and Henry in their zone; Yeah Ghost is them breaking free."

THEN : Zero 7 - Destiny

"This time, from an early stage, we were clocking ourselves as we went though the steps of writing... trying to be a bit more aware of our habits and to approach the process of making a record in a different ways" - Sam

NOW : Zero 7 - Mr. Mcgee

Album Review :: Zero 7 :: Yeah Ghost

*Smiling from ear to ear as I listen to Zero 7's 4th Studio Album Yeah Ghost*
I've been a fan ever since I was introduced to them back in 06, yeah I was a little late, but nevertheless I caught on. Zero 7 is primarily Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker, for added flavor however they feature a slew of beautiful voices. On this installment of their creativity we have Eska Mtungwazi, Martha Tilston and Rowdy Superstar to name a few. Yeah Ghost, which hits stores today is a different sound for the UK duo. Their last three albums weren't as upbeat as this production, they were more along the lines of ambient acid jazz.. With the exception of The Road [a sweet endearing ballad], all the tracks on YG are pretty upbeat & dance club worthy, I'm excited & intrigued. It's safe to say they have had experienced artistic growth, all while still staying true to themselves and their art form. With Yeah Ghost they will retain old fans and gain new ones, this is a hot one for 09.

As I hit the play button my ears were tuned to expect the downtempo mellow sounds like that of 2001's Simple Things and 2004's When It Falls. Instead I was hit with a multi tempo sound like that of their 2006 release, The Garden, from the 1st track, Count Me Out. If their new style wasn't apparent @ the 1st track, Mr.Mcgee would be it for me. Only the 2nd song on the 11 tracked album, it opens with a strong reverb followed by a 70's vintage soul type feel over horns, drums, and carefully placed claps & tambourines. At that point I knew I was in for a new Zero 7, throw all preconceived ears away and be re introduced.

Swing enters with the sounds of a xylophone with a quaint mellow voice leading you thru her quest of "trying to figure out how to get down". The voice on this track is one of those you are forced to listen to because it's subtle but captivating. The background vocals have the perfect measure of 'upbeatness' w/o being corny over the simplistic percussion the song had to offer. As it opened with the xylophone it also faded with it, maintaining the playful tone of the track.

Honestly I could discuss each track because they all are from a different genre. Sleeper and Everything Up would be the electro-pop tracks, very dance party worthy... electric guitar, warped sounds, and necessary keyboard magic for electronic perfection. Pop Art Blue is the folk alternative track, think Beatles meets Postal Service. I imagine they were travelling when they wrote this one, it sounds like it was inspired. Medicine Man, lol, get ready to polka in a 2009 pop kinda way. [I know that's an accordion I hear.] Ghost Symbol, aptly fitted with the ghastly sounding singer, this will be the fix for your broken beat needs. With a wicked electro tech riff, drum snares and echoes this is another potential clubbers dream. Solastalgia, an instrumental, makes me wish I paid attention in music class. The instrumentation that takes place here is nothing but 'soundscapey' melodic heaven. Closing out with a drumline's dream sequence; All of Us with its infectious percussion, seals the deal on the album being a well put together body of work.

The overall feel of the album is a music head's dream. Upbeat and filled with diversity, whether you have an established relationship with Zero 7's work or not, it will have you hooked. It is for that reason, along with it's replayAbility that Pink Bubblegum gives Yeah Ghost 5.5/7 Head Nods.

InLove - For Minnie Riperton

I promise you I was just laughing at Michael Baisden pronouncing Minnie's last name as Rippleton anytime he says her name and yesterday. However, the DJ Cam produced, InLOve sung, For Minnie Riperton is no joke indeed...
They start it out with some "early Prince era" drum programming and then break it down into some Slave all while keeping it jazzy. Sexy to say the least

InLOve is a musician and dancer turned model. At 20 she met DJ Cam and they collaborated on one of my favorite projects, SoulShine, which yielded the million selling single Summer in Paris. Her new album, Stories, is in stores now and is entirely produced by DJ Cam

Innosphere - Everlasting Love

We turned you on to the Chicago duo Innosphere HERE. They're back with a 21st century remake of a 1978 Rufus/Chaka Khan classic, Everlasting Love.

The million plus selling, grammy nominated album, Ask Rufus, was an experimental one for the group. "For example, for the first time Chaka sings in a very low octave at the beginning of the song Everlasting Love. During an interview, after the album's release, she stated that she wanted to explore the lower ranges in her voice."

US3 - I Let ‘Em Know

I was completely unaware of the 7th seventh album from producer Geoff Wilkinson’s hip-hop-jazz crew Us3. With Stop. Think. Run, Geoff introduces 2 new young MCs hot off the streets of New York. Underground hip-hop fans will already know the name of 23 year-old Sene, and spoken word aficionados will certainly be aware of 20 year-old Brook Yung. This album really has something for everybody!

From the gritty opener “Gotta Get Out Of Here” to the bossa nova club track “She’s With Me,” the album touches on tales of urban paranoia and desperation, to the pursuit of true romance. Although Us3 are known for having a diverse range of influences, the most surprising tracks are those that feature a more stripped down production approach. “You Already Know” is completely made of vocal samples, and “Turn It Up” utilizes only drums and synthesized bleeps (jazz crunk?). The hard electronics of “The Future Ain’t What It Once Was” & moody piano-led “Got To Make A Livin” resonate with the current economic crisis, and Brook Yung’s gorgeous tale of attraction in “The Love Of My Life” is perfectly complimented by the lush piano & shuffling drums. A strong latin influence is prevalent in both the vibes led party track “Can I Get It?,” and the seductive sleazy horns of “I Let ‘Em Know”, while the unusual time signature of “Who Got Next?” has Sene effortlessly wrapping his twisting lyrical wordplay around a funky 4/4/3/4 groove.
Brook Yung is already a rising star on the US spoken word circuit. Last year he won 1st place in LA’s Adult Poetry Slam and 1st place in the NYC Urban Word Youth Slam. He is currently a member of NYC’s Urban Word Team, and performed alongside Wyclef at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Everyone will relate to something here.
Geoff sums up the album title:
“In life sometimes you need to stop and think about what you are doing and what you really want to do. And when you’ve identified what that is, run towards it”
