Another Heist / Camp Lo [Album Review]

"Let's get rich (What?!?!?) Luchini falling from the sky, this is it (what?!), the cheeky dimes the sugar dimes / Can't quit, (what?!)"...

If nothing else, you probably could come in on the "what's" and that used to be enough when you heard "This is it" by Camp Lo. Well, theeeeerrrrreeeee baaaaacccckkkk! Another Heist by Camp Lo is another hip hop incarnation of what it would sound like if two of the coolest dudes ever rolled all the blaxplotations films with some cryogenicaly frozen herb from 1969 and the lost episodes of Good Times into a musical Swisher. In other words they haven't lost a step.
From the title track 1 "Another Heist" to track 12 "Uptown/Remix", you'll feel how ever you felt when Camp Lo was in heavy rotation back in the day. This hip hop duo is famous for making semi-distinguishable slanguage as enjoyable as any song you really do know all the words too.
Instead of the "traditional" review, you know, which songs are hot and which songs are not, I thought I'd invite a dialogue. Let's discuss "growth vs. good" as it pertains to music. I was torn while listening to Another Heist. On the one had, I'm a fan of Camp Lo. I love this new album...but why? Because it's great new music or because I love the "type of music" that is Camp Lo? This dichotomy has inspired my fist bi-polar album review score. As a fan, I give Another Heist by Camp Lo 7 out of 7 Head Nods. It's EVERYTHING that I would expect from Camp Lo. Catchy hooks, hard hitting hip hop beats and really cool slanguage. If you're a fan, you won't be disappointed.
As an unbiased album reviewer, I'd give it 5 out of 7 Head Nods. This is a solid album. There are at least 3 or 4 solid songs your'e sure to enjoy. "Another Heist" (track 1) is classic hip hop. "Satin Amnesia" (track 3) is super mellow. With all that you hear in today's rap music it felt good to hear a smoothed out track. "Get Em Lo" (track 4) would be a good theme song if I ever heard one. The classic Camp Lo cadence can be heard throughout. You can just let this one ride. "Boogie Nights" (track 5) has a "Kanye-ish" feel for to the track (you know, sped up vocal sample, repeated break or bridge of a track, Kanye...the early years). It's funny how that some how sounds a little "dated" now, but I still like it. And "Beautiful People" (track 8) is stepping music and I wanted to find my cane and top hat when I heard it. R. Kelly would be proud. Give the album a listen and let me know if you found yourself torn as well.

I'm Thed Weller and I approve this review.

Camp Lo 'Summer Love'

This is it WHAT Luchini pouring from the sky, lets get rich WHAT. blah blah blah blah something something and get lit WHAT. I think everyone knows that song or at least that hook. And that's about all of the music that anyone probably remembers from Camp Lo. Not exactly one hit wonders, they've consistently been making music since the days of Luchini which was actually apart of a pretty good album Uptown Saturday Night. But they haven't really been on my radar since then, that is until I heard this track. Capitalizing on the summer buzz and flippin' the same Sylvia Striplin sample that Junior Mafia used on 'Get Money' Camp Lo has captured my interest again. With nice headnodding lyrics and a smooth hook provided courtesy of Tyler Woods, this is sure to be the next Camp Lo Track to remember.

Tanya morgan - Brooklynati Album Review

As 2008 came to a close, influential & legendary emcee Q-Tip called for a Renaissance. A renaissance is a cultural event; a revival in the world of art. Hip Hop culture and more specifically the art form of rap has been deemed to be in a hopeless state of decline. Amidst all of the new fad/trends/styles/sounds that have emerged recently, there are times when I wish for the Golden Era of Hip Hop to return. The days of Brand Nubian, Digable Planets, and Camp Lo are far behind, but there are times when I hear music from artists that rekindle the feelings I got when I first heard AZ’s Sugar Hill or Black Moon’s I Gotcha Opin Remix. Little Brother’s The Listening album was one, Lupe Fiasco’s Kick Push is another and the most recent album to conjure feelings of the Golden Age is Tanya Morgan’s Brooklynati. You should take a visit!

Great writers have been whisking us away to far away, fictional, semi-Utopian lands (cities) for decades: Never Never Land, Oz, Narnia and now Brooklynati. Not only does Tanya Morgan take you to a city with sucka radio jocks and parks named after great producers, they successfully transport you to an Age of thoughtful and witty, sometimes even playful lyrics, macho posturing, soul samples, meaningful/funny skits and relevant guest appearances that actually augment tracks. Remember these things? They also channel some of your favorite 90s groups throughout the album, reciting and reinterpreting lyrics and even developing clever caricatures (Hardcore Gentleman). The production will also have you reminiscing of a time almost a decade and a half ago; On Don’t U Holla and Just Not True I can hear ‘93 til Infinity-era Souls of Mischief rocking over these joints.

Visiting Broolynati transported me to the time of my early hip hop purchases that I had to hide in my closet so my parents wouldn’t see that I had a cassette that contained explicit lyrics and incited memories of writing down lyrics to be able to spit them in a cipher of peers. I know that I’ve made mention of their ability to evoke memories of early hip hop but Tanya Morgan more than holds it down for the present and beyond (Morgan Blu, So Damn Down, She’s Gone). TM consists of gifted and creative emcees and a list of talented producers who astonishingly have prevented me from looking for or pressing the fast forward button! In addition, Brooklynati has a veritable who’s who of underground VIPs assisting the crew of emcees in keeping your head nodding, feet tapping and fingers snapping. Tanya Morgan are so considerate that they won’t ask you to click your heels to get to Brooklynati, they just ask you to pop in the cassette, er press play.
DJ Rahdu gives Brooklynati 6 out of 7 head nods.
